Costs for Bridge and Abutments

Costs for Bridge and Abutments

Costs for Bridge and Abutments

(OP)
I'm looking for a real basic construction cost number for bridge deck (in Square Feet) and for bridge abutments (in square-face foot).  It would be helpful if these included a range.  I can get my hands on costs for rebar, concrete, etc. but was hoping to get an overall number (unit cost) associated with the bridge deck and abutments as a whole.  Maybe even some links to sites that provides this information?

The particular bridge design I'm trying to get preliminary costs for includes 20' high abutments with a bridge that needs to span about 100'.

Any input would be appreciated.

RE: Costs for Bridge and Abutments

Bridge: 55-60/sq ft.  Abutments: 10-20/sq ft

RE: Costs for Bridge and Abutments

It is really hard to do unit prices for bridge work. It depends on the type of superstructure, foundation designs access, what you are bridging over. If you do nt estimate for a bridge builder, then the best way to do it is to break it into items and use RS Means. Be sure to use regional adjustments. By sure to bounce you materials up for escalation, probably 30% per year.

Check with your state DOT. Most publish average bid prices.

I totally agree to DRC it's not simply a matter of one bridge, but actually there are different aspects to be considered, e.g. foundation of bridge, then type of super structure, sections etc, purpose it gonna surve.

RE: Costs for Bridge and Abutments

I am not sure if state DOT will provide a break down of the
average bid prices.  I used to work for a bridge contractor
involved in State and Federally funded projects and several engineers and job superintendents would be putting numbers together for the VP and owner to submit their bids.  Obviously, your work will involve getting a set of project specifications to understand the several stages of the project in order to estimate the number of manhours for surveyors, operating engineers, laborers, masons, carpenters, iron workers, teamsters, equipment (operation and maintenance), supply,  and material costs.
When bid time arrives, don't be surprise if some owners may not reduced their bids by some percentage based on rumors that so and so's bids are X numbers of Dollars and all of your work goes out of the window.
Some contractors may also produce much reduced bids in anticipation of cost-plus work which is additional work overlooked in the bid specification or extra work related to project.
Once you have prepared one bid, any succeeding ones will be a lot easier.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm aware there are numerous items that will cause the overall bridge cost to vary dramatically, however, I do not have detailed plans for the bridge at this point.

I'm working on a ACE wetland permit for a proposed road and the permit requires that we complete an "alternative road analysis."  A portion of the analysis includes putting together very rough overall construction costs for each of the road alternatives, one of which includes a bridge over the state highway and adjacent railroad tracks.

Final construction plans will be completed for one road alignment (if we ever get the wetland permit), and at that time I will have enough info to create a detailed cost estimate.  But for now, I was hoping to get some general numbers (or just a range) for the bridge.

Thanks again for all your help, any more comments would be further appreciated.

RE: Costs for Bridge and Abutments

Clear span;no piers;abutment walls on shore lines. Anticipate $20 million in the North East. Overseas such as China, anticipate $1 million.
