Used AC Synchronous Motor

Used AC Synchronous Motor

Used AC Synchronous Motor

(OP)
Hello,

Does anyone know of a company that sells used motors? I am in the market for a 15-25hp 460V AC Synchronous Motor.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe

RE: Used AC Synchronous Motor

Syncronous motors normally come only with large capacities. You could try to use a synch generator as a motor. What is your application ?

RE: Used AC Synchronous Motor

That would be a very rare bird, indeed.

RE: Used AC Synchronous Motor

Perhaps a run-of-the-mill induction motor and a vector VFD set to synchronous speed?

Just fishin..

My application is a smaller version of a full size 4160V 3 phase ac generator. I am using a 12 pulse LCI to power this motor. We have at our company a 240V 3 phase AC synchronous motor but the transformer we have for the 12 pulse LCI is for a 460V AC synchronous motor. It needs to be synchronous because we need to hook up a excitation system to the field and insure communication between the excitation system and the LCI.

Thanks,

joe

RE: Used AC Synchronous Motor

A new transformer will be probably be easier to find or have built than a small synchronous machine.

You might look at the educational establishments and see if anyone is scrapping a teaching machine. Many universities in the UK are hellbent on scrapping their under-utilised and capital-intensive electrical machines labs in the rush to cram in as many kids as possible. No wonder modern grads know nothing about machine theory! Not sure if your country has the same malaise?

RE: Used AC Synchronous Motor

As mentioned, you'll probably have to get a small synchronous generator and run it as a motor.

Have you checked to see if the 240V (230V?) volt machine is recconnectable for 480V (460V)? If not, it should be a simple matter to have a rewind shop reconnect the winding groups internally for double voltage or rewind it for double voltage.
Note: Standard motor voltages in NEMA land are a multiple of 115V, 115V, 230V,460V, 575V.
Standard system or supply voltages in NEMA land are multiples of 120V, 120V, 240V, 480V, 600V. The 4.2% difference is a voltage drop allowance.

RE: Used AC Synchronous Motor

I don't understand edison123's comment as I am familiar with a couple of brands of electric actuator that use fractional to 1-2-3 HP size synchronous motors.  Their low speed along with low current draw is their claim to fame.  The one brand I can remember at the moment is Harold Beck Actuators.

RE: Used AC Synchronous Motor

Three phase alternators start at about 20 KVA for 1800 RPM and around 30 KVA for 3600 rpm units. When the engine wears out, the units are quite cheap. Problem is, they are mostly single bearing construction. Adding a second bearing and a drive flange is not easy or cheap.

OP asked for 15-25 hp synch motors, which are rare to find. What you refer may selsyns for position controls, my $0.03.

RE: Used AC Synchronous Motor

A synchronous motor that small will be hard to find. We called contacts all over Canada and USA and finally found a 50hp motor but even then we ended up re-winding the rotor so it wasn't cheap.

Bill's suggestion of checking into reconnecting your existing motor is the best solution. Even if it can't be reconnected you'll probably find it quicker and easier to get it rewound than finding another one.

RE: Used AC Synchronous Motor

Reconnect the existing leads.
Have a motor shop reconnect the coil groups.
Have a motor shop rewind the motor.
Buy a transformer.

Find a suitable motor or generator.
