Using Section VIII Div. 1 Immersion Heater in a B31.1 Pipe Section

Using Section VIII Div. 1 Immersion Heater in a B31.1 Pipe Section

Using Section VIII Div. 1 Immersion Heater in a B31.1 Pipe Section

(OP)
I have a U stamped immersion heater that I would like to insert into a B31.1 pipe section for operation.  Both the heater and the pipe section have the same design conditions (3000 psig @ 700 F) and are compatable materials.

Is there any guidance in the code that would either permit me to or prohibit me from doing this?  If there is, can you point me to the applicable sections?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

RE: Using Section VIII Div. 1 Immersion Heater in a B31.1 Pipe Section

TES211,

It is probably a stretch since there is not steam being generated by the immersion heater, but this has some aspects of the juncture between the two Codes.

thread794-191364: Implication of a ASME Sect 1 and Sect 8 steam boiler , and there are the two ASME Code Cases,

 ASME Case 1855 , and ASME 2485.
