Save as with history.... ?

Save as with history.... ?

Save as with history.... ?

(OP)
We are trying to figure out if it is possible to save a file (model and drawing) to a new name and save the file history from the previous name. Is this something we would be able to do? This is a PDM Vault thing. Thanks!

Huh? We are using PDMworks. We tried a save as and the history went away and started fresh. we are trying to figure out a way to save the history from the previous part # to the new part #.

Oh, sorry I misread. I don't think you can save/copy the history from one part to the other. It is a new part and will start from the first rev, unless your admin can setup a special check-in folder where you can start from any rev.

RE: Save as with history.... ?

I don't use PDMWorks but surely it must allow a backup copy of the assy and its parts to be made (with history). If so can you not just rename the backup copy and then move it back into the main vault?

cheers

As soon as I rename a file that comes out of the Vault it erases the history. I need to find a way to save the history but rename the file to a new number. (This is for R&D mainly).

I need to figure out how to save the history while renaming. That is our issue. We need to know if we can keep the history so we can possibly rollback the files to the previous rev if possible.

RE: Save as with history.... ?

From a documentation control perspective, what you are asking to do seems incorrect.  When you do a saveas, you are basically saying, I want a NEW part that is similar to this other part.  A new part by definition doesn't have any history.  It sounds to me that you may want to look into creating some sort of "superceded by" or "previous document" entry into pdmworks.  I do not use pdmworks so I can't give you further info.

At least in PDMWorks Workgroup, you can rename a file directly inside of the vault.  For this to complete successfully, you will need ownership of the file and any files that reference that file (drawings / assemblies).  You may have to change a setting using the VaultAdmin to allow renaming.

RE: Save as with history.... ?

The only way I've seen this type of thing done is via Agile PLM.  You would create a new part using SaveAs, but the new part has something like a SavedFrom field that linked back to the original part.  You could do this in PDMWorks via a SavedFrom custom property that specifies the old part number and revision.  It would have to be manually filled out, but I can't think of a better way at the moment.
