Thrust loads on Pressure Vessels/Process columns.

[First off, let me tell you I am structural (just to let you know this isn't my field).]

I have always been curious: how do pressure vessel guys determine if the forces from thrust loads (due to platform supports framing in [for example]) are acceptable in magnitude? I always get referred to either 2 things: either Bergman's paper, or ASME's code for boilers and pressure vessels. I have a copy of Berman's paper and it seems to be looking at the vessel as a whole (more than locally). If ASME's code does have this could you tell me where (maybe a page #).

Thanks in advance!

RE: Thrust loads on Pressure Vessels/Process columns.

There are several different pressure vessel handbooks that have design approaches for different clips welded to a shell.  Also, WRC 297 and WRC 107 give stresses due to forces on nozzles, and these can be adapted to certain attachments at times.

Thank you JStephen. One question though: could you recommend a handbook that addresses this? (A specific title? It seems like there must be a million pressure vessel handbooks out there. Thanks again.)

RE: Thrust loads on Pressure Vessels/Process columns.

Bednar's Pressure Vessel Design Handbook has several pages on clips.  Megyesy's Pressure Vessel Handbook doesn't seem to cover the topic.  I don't have a copy of Moss's book to check it.

Thanks RC & Stephen

piping code ANSI B31 covers thrust on nozzles from safety and relief valves discharges.
