What grade of Cast Iron ?
What grade of Cast Iron ?
(OP)
Dear Folks;
I have to make casting and machining drawings for 2 pump flanges and 1 gland cover. can anyone give me general guidelines as to what grade of cast iron to specify and why that material would be used.
Regards Adrian

RE: What grade of Cast Iron ?
According to the Design Data book by P.S.G tech, India
which is the mostly used data book for design in India.
U can use Cast iron with a grade of GCI 25 for making pump
body. U can use this for making flanges also. Its nearest equivalent overseas grade are
SAE 120
DIN 1681/GG26
BS 1452/Gr 14
CSN 41 24 24

RE: What grade of Cast Iron ?
You can use Ductile Iron which has twice the strength of ordinary cast iron. Can't remember the specs. right now, but can easily check. Its advantageous to the extent that it will survive much knocks and 'bangs' of installation and maintenance.

RE: What grade of Cast Iron ?
DIN 1691
Gußeisen mit Lamellengraphit (Grauguß); Eigenschaften
Flake graphite cast iron (grey cast iron); properties
Fonte grise; propriétes
DIN 1681 is for steel castings.
Stahlguß für allgemeine Verwendungszwecke; Technische Lieferbedingungen
Steel castings for general purposes; technical delivery conditions
Acier moulé pour usage générale; conditions techniques de livraison
Second, the SAE number does not seem to be correct. SAE J431, Automotive Gray Iron Castings, is the specification for this type of cast iron. I could find no reference to a grade 120, but SAE did change the classification system, so possibly that is the reason.
ASTM A 126 may be a more appropriate standard, since you are not looking for an automotive specification. ASTM A 126 is titled Standard Specification for Gray Iron Castings for Valves, Flanges, and Pipe Fittings.
