Blending into Pipeline

Blending into Pipeline

Blending into Pipeline

(OP)
I have a client who is going to blend biodiesel into ULSD at the Pipeline.  They want to blend to make B5 and send it along the pipeline.

I am not totally responsible for the design of this area, however, I am designing the pumps/piping up to the pipeline tie in.  So far I have zero information about the equipment/conditions that will be at the pipeline and I am starting to feel like they don't know what they will be doing.

Can anyone give me an idea of the equipment necessary to do the job and any special attachment methods required?

I appreciate the help in advance.

RE: Blending into Pipeline

you will need meters on both the diesel and biodiesel.  You will need at least 1 control vale on each of the products.  You will need a PLC or actually, most flow totalizer can do flow control.

The pipeline may insist that you install a static mixer and a totalized meter for the mixture as it enters the pipeline.  They may insist on aproportional sampler to geta sample that can be analyzed for the exact composition.  You may need a desitomter on the streams as well for QC reasons or for continious adjustment to the flow meters (for T&P also).

RE: Blending into Pipeline

Do you mean at and in the pipeline terminal tanks, or in the pipeline itself?

If you plan to actually do it in a third party's pipeline, get their advice, permission and any quality control requirements they might have too.

This is the owners pipeline, we are going to connect a supply tank of Bio Diesel to the pipeline so that they can blend with ULSD at the pipeline.

I was just wondering about the specific equipment that will be located out at the pipeline, because I need specify the pumps.

RE: Blending into Pipeline

Could be everything or could be nothing.  Its probably important enough to get it right to go have a look see.  They may have blending pumps already there (??).  Maybe just a tank or two.  Who knows?

There is only a tank, we are going to put in pumps to move the Bdsl from the tanks, new piping, and connect to the pipeline.  What the client wants is B5 to come out of their pipeline at the receiving terminal.

thanks for all the responses so far.

RE: Blending into Pipeline

What's the blend ratio, diameter, length and flowrate of the pipeline?
