GSM Antenna

GSM Antenna

(OP)
I want to know the measurements of a Yagi Antenna suitable for a GSM phone where the signal strength is week. My GSM system is 800 MHz.

RE: GSM Antenna

Yagi antennas would not be very suitable for GSM applications unless you are trying to cover a tunnel or similar area. The problem is that Yagi's typically have very narrow and very directional beamwidths. This would cause the coverage area very specific. On the phone side, this would be even more impratical because if you are not aiming the yagi right at the transmitter (or strongest mulitpath signal) then the antenna would not be much good. This would require that you know where the transmitter or strongest multipath signal is at all times. Can you see how this would be impossible for a mobile phone user?

Thanks for the reply. But my problem is that I have an Estate which is partially under GSM coverage. I would like to station a GSM phone just as a fixed phone in order to communicate with the caretaker and to send SMS.
Thanks again.

RE: GSM Antenna

Hi Felician,

At GSM/PCS bands, cutting an antenna is rather difficult (but not impossible). For a continuous application you may want to consider a commecially built antenna. There are many manufacturers, but one of them is:
