Hot forming Inco 718 (AMS 5596)

Hot forming Inco 718 (AMS 5596)

(OP)
Hello, we need to Hot form some Inco 718 plate, .216" thick to a gentle radii for an engine strut.  Imagine a 3 foot radius bend.  Where can I find info on forming temperature, required tonnage etc.... I have never done Hot forming before.  The Rolles Royce spec does not define the allowable temperature.

RE: Hot forming Inco 718 (AMS 5596)

The force x area of the hot deformation can be estimated from some basics. An element of beam will deform plastically according to the SS diagram at temp. Assume a beam loaded uniformly, simply supported. We are talking deformation all the way up to the tensile strength. Then integrate the whole area based on the analysed element, and you will have a rough estimate of force req'd.

Of course, you will need to know the hot properties of the material. Take your estimate and double it. You may want to even triple it.

"I have never done Hot forming before"

Find some one who has to assist you.
Constructive advice doesn't go at it alone.
To obstacles that can go wrong.

Why hot forming, press tonnage?

I have experience in forming, but I do not have hot forming Inco 718 experience, go to the Materials Engineering forum, bunch of great guys over there they can help you.

I have solution anneal the material between forming operations. Then do a final aging, so in hot forming I cannot help you. I have great book that an old timer gave me many moons ago. I will see if can dig it up.

Good Luck
