Has anyone used Eagle Cadsoft?

Has anyone used Eagle Cadsoft?

Has anyone used Eagle Cadsoft?

(OP)
Hi I'm using Eagle Cadsoft v5.0. I'm making a board with four layers.
        Top-Signal
        Layer2-GND
        Layer3-Vcc
        Bottom-Signal
My question is why I can't define a supply layer after having placed tracks between the layers. If I try to do so it pops me out error saying that the layer can't be used as a supply layer because it contains wires! If I want to change the order of the layers it means that I just can't? I don't get this  program?
    Thanks !

RE: Has anyone used Eagle Cadsoft?

I've never used Eagle as I've always been lucky enough to have more powerful packages to work with.  However, try this and see if it will work... select all of the "wires" on the layer you want to make a power plane.  Ctrl-X them to remove the wires but keep them on the clipboard (Eagle may use a different key combination, but I'm thinking in terms of Microsoft-standard cut-n-paste style shortcuts).  Change the layer to a power plane.  Change the old power plane to a wire plane.  Ctrl-V (paste) the wires to the new plane.

I don't know if Eagle will allow you to change the layer of the pasted wires before you actually lay them down (it's the Tab key on Protel/Altium), but it's certainly worth a shot.

Let us know if it works.

Save before you try it.

I haven't used Eagle in years and then only for messing around.  But I do remember someone with this same question somewhere and there was a solution.  I actually think Dan's may be the way to do it.

Unfortunately Ctrl+X didn't work, Eagle has some group+cut+delete instruction to cut an object from the layout. So I had to rip up all the traces and define the power plane. Thanks anyway! :)

RE: Has anyone used Eagle Cadsoft?

Pucca,

I use eagle cadsoft and have found the web site to be a wealth of information. The group of people using and modifying eagle is rather astounding. It has its drawbacks but cost and number of people enjoying its flexibility are not among them. The forum http://www.cadsoft.de/forum.htm can be accessed through a newsgroup on your email software. I did not see your particular problem previously posted. Start a new post people love to help. In my manual on page 157 the way to define a supply layer exists in the layers display. Select the layer 1, 2, or 16 for example click change, name the layer and designate as a supply layer. Command line is easy: "Layer 2 $GND". You did mention you had signals in your layer which I do not have on the design with which I am currently working, and was successful. Again, there is good help on the website, the forum, and the manual.

Good Luck

Hi, xray..since you have used Eagle do you know why the airwires of the gnd or the vcc (I have defined with polygon a ground plane and a supply plane) remain after I have placed a via to ground or vcc plane?

RE: Has anyone used Eagle Cadsoft?

What did you name the polygons?

I named the polygons and everything is OK.Thanks a lot!
Another thing I wanted to ask is how can I have a ground poured all over the fisst signal layer? Is there a way to define it in eagle ?
