belt-pulley problem

belt-pulley problem

(OP)
I have a belt-pulley problem that I could use some help with. The purpose of the FEA is to determine operating stresses in a new pulley design. The pulley will use a multi-V belt but I am only concerned with stresses close to the center of the pulley so the belt grooves do not need to be included in the model.

My model consists of a pulley and the section of the belt that wraps around the pulley. If I fix the pulley and apply tensile loads to the ends of the belt, how can I get Ansys to correctly portray the pressure load and resultant force created by the belt tension on the pulley?  I would have thought I could accomplish this by establishing a friction contact between the belt and pulley but I can't get Ansys to solve. It solves fine if the belt and pulley are bonded but the belt is not bonded in reality. Is there a better way to accompish this?

Thanks,
Mel
