10 HP motor, 460 V/35A

10 HP motor, 460 V/35A

I am looking at a submersible mixer motor, 10 hp, 580 RPM (this is motor speed), 8.15 KW operating point, 460 volts 3 phase,  35 FLA. I had designed for a 10 HP motor and specified feeder and starter for 15 FLA. Does 35 amps make sense?

RE: 10 HP motor, 460 V/35A

At that speed, I would expect more than 20 amps amps but 36 is higher than I have seen.

That may well be service factor amps.  Submersible motor mfgrs often label there motors with SFA for some reason.

I have looked over my design notes and the specified mixer, Flygt, has a full load of 16 amps, same speed motor, same KW input. The substitute, KSB, says 35 amps. I verified this with the manufacturer. Something is not correct and I would hate to buy bigger breakers and combo starters and then find out the motor was mis-marked.
Thanks
Steve

RE: 10 HP motor, 460 V/35A

That looks more like 230 volt current than 460 volt current. Is there a typo, or is someone looking in the wrong column?

RE: 10 HP motor, 460 V/35A

First of all the former motor- Flygt product- was only 10 hp [7.46 kW].The required
power was 8.15 kW [1.092*Prated] That means the liquid specific gravity was 1.092 times more than designed. For these induction motors of 12 poles the multiplication: (pf*efficiency) is very low [about 0.4-0.6].
SEE http://www.flygt.lt/829377.pdf
From KSP you received probably a 15 HP [11.7 kW] motor.
P=SQRT (3)*Irated*ULL*pf*efficiency=sqrt (3)*35*0.46*.42=11.7 kW.
If it is the same propeller and the motor speed is the same then the required power will be the same 8.15 kW. If the rated current is 35 A the actual current will be between 20 to 25 A [approxim. 35A*8.15kw/11.7kw].
This is my opinion.

RE: 10 HP motor, 460 V/35A

Something is definitely wrong.  35A is about right for a 10HP, 200V, 3PH motor or a 25HP, 460V, 3PH motor.

RE: 10 HP motor, 460 V/35A

Nothing is wrong. Usual standard motor of 460 V 15 hp of 2 or 4 poles pf=.87 efficiency=.88 Irated= 18.34 A
15 hp of 12 poles pf=0.67 efficiency= 0.7 Irated=35 A.
