Pressure Vessel Plate Material

Pressure Vessel Plate Material

Is there a resource/guide available to help in determining the proper plate material selection for pressure vessels?

I'm specifying data sheets for the fabrication of air receivers, and flash tanks.  Flash tank is below 50 psig operating, and air receivers below 120 psig.

Thanks

there are many available...but the most common for vessels
is sa-516-70

It sounds like you need the Pressure Vessel Handbook by Eugene F. Megyesy.

Completely agree with the post by RCHandy in that you some assistance. I would check with your people and see if there is someone who can do a little mentoring.
One quick way is to check existing drawings and check their material of constructions and see if it would satisfy your code requirements.

Is the vessel for your personal use or for a client?
If for a client ask him what he wants.

Thanks to everyone for your posts.  I'll check into the book.  With the multiple choices in the code for materials, I was looking for some kind of guide that make selecting materials a simpler effort as opposed to needing a masters in metalurgy.  dazed

This is my first effort at specifying vessel materials for a client.

Thanks again for your input!

USFeng,
As the client, you are responsible for considering the type of material required.  For example, if a carbon steeel such as SA516-Grade 70 (which is probably most common grade used in North America) is subject to corrosion from the service, you must specify the appropriate corrosion allowance for the manufacturer to add to the required thickness thickness.
