RE: structural steel buildings in aluminum plants

That's a mighty broad question.  There are a lot of different processes in the aluminum and alumina industry, but it can all be considered heavy industrial.

What is the reason for your enquiry?  This may help to lead you in the right direction.

Thanks hokie66 and PSlem for your interest,

Actually I am supposed to prepare a presentation on the aluminum and alumina industry structural buildings, since my company is targeting to take new project regarding this field.
The buildings that I am interested in are the SAG Mill (grinding and slurry process), Digestion Unit (digestion process), and Evaporator (clarification process). I gust want to give an idea about the structural systems usually used in such buildings, Also, the most severe type of forces induced by different processes on the buildings. You are describing components of an alumina refinery, where alumina is extracted from bauxite.  It is basically a chemical plant.  The structures are braced steel frames of several levels, mostly not clad on the walls.  Quite a severe environment for corrosion protection.  If your company has no experience in alumina refineries, you will have a steep learning curve.

RE: structural steel buildings in aluminum plants

It sounds like your company has no experience in this field.  Why would they think they can take something like this on?

I would urge caution, I got involved in a specialized facility once and the further I got into it the less I  realized I knew.  And not just me, I came aboard well after the contract was awarded and much work had been done, but most people were in the same boat. We eventually got it done but took a bath financially.
