CJP Splice

CJP Splice

CJP Splice

(OP)
We recieved an RFI stating that due to material availability a shop splice will be required for a W33x201 we speced. The fabricator said the splice is to be a complete-joint-penetration weld and weld access holes filled, all to be tested with ultrasonic testing.

My manager wants to aswer the RFI by saying that we require one critical splice calculation.

Is there even a calculation to be performed? When I was in school we were always told there was nothing to be checked on a CJP weld.

RE: CJP Splice

That's right the strength of the joint is controlled by the base metal for CJP welds.  See Table J2.5 AISC Spec 13th ed.

They may be others issues to be concerned about with that much welding and a beam of that size.  Maybe someone else here will know.

RE: CJP Splice

Can the beam be spliced at a location so that a CJP joint is not required?

Dik

RE: CJP Splice

I would just answer in the affirmative, but would specify a distance from maximum moment for the splice location.

RE: CJP Splice

Scaredy cats, CJP weld is completely equal the unwelded portion of the beam.  Any lack of trust shows your ignorance of welding.

RE: CJP Splice

The only objection I would have is ultrasound testing if there is a fabrication limit on where the splice can be located. It may depend on use, but we generally spec mag particle testing, at least for the tension flange.

RE: CJP Splice

CJP  welds only develop the full strength of the joint, if they are specified correctly and they are done properly.

RE: CJP Splice

Agree with civilperson.  It's as good as the original.  No calculations necessary.  It sounds like the manager in the original post doesn't understand this.

RARMBJ, that goes without saying.  For anything we do to work, it has to be done right.

RE: CJP Splice

I would make sure the weld is prepared under the supervision of a CWI to make sure the quality and materials meet the requirements.

RE: CJP Splice

"Any lack of trust shows your ignorance of welding."

Alternatively, it shows recognition of some risk, however small. If you can eliminate that risk by avoiding maximum moment, what's the harm?

If fatigue is an issue then there are calculations to be done, the welded splice is not equal to the virgin beam.
