CJP Splice
CJP Splice
(OP)
We recieved an RFI stating that due to material availability a shop splice will be required for a W33x201 we speced. The fabricator said the splice is to be a complete-joint-penetration weld and weld access holes filled, all to be tested with ultrasonic testing.
My manager wants to aswer the RFI by saying that we require one critical splice calculation.
Is there even a calculation to be performed? When I was in school we were always told there was nothing to be checked on a CJP weld.

RE: CJP Splice
They may be others issues to be concerned about with that much welding and a beam of that size. Maybe someone else here will know.

RARMBJ, that goes without saying. For anything we do to work, it has to be done right.

Alternatively, it shows recognition of some risk, however small. If you can eliminate that risk by avoiding maximum moment, what's the harm?
If fatigue is an issue then there are calculations to be done, the welded splice is not equal to the virgin beam.
