5052 Al retainer ring
5052 Al retainer ring
(OP)
I really have no experience in this area but I need to figure out a way to make retainer rings (basically its just a ring with not very tight tolerances, 90mm ID, 92 mm OD,1.6 mm thickness, and opening in ring of 1.75 mm.) I am probably going to use 5052 Al or a material similar to that and need about 500 of these rings. The only major concerns are that the surfaces have to be smooth and I have to get rid of the corners. I would appreciate any information on topics/references I should look into as well as any advice y'all have. Thanks

1st idea - If you can get tube the right size, saw cut to length, split them, then spread them on a mandrel.
2nd idea - If you can get rectangular bar the right size, wind it around a mandrel like a coil spring and cut out a slot.
To debur them throw them in a tumbler.

Hush has two very good suggestions. I think the first one is best but it sounds like maybe you are looking for design ideas simple as it may seem to others. There are a number retaining ring suppliers. First two that come to mind are Truarc and Smalley. If you look at their catalogs, the basic design will hit you. Or go to the hardware and look at the selection of retaining rings for ideas on how to configure your geometry.
If you cannot get tubing with thick enough wall, you could buy solid round stock and bore it to allow enough thickness for tangs, part off on lathe, split and drill holes in tangs for retaining ring plier tips.
If this is not the kind of reference you are loooking for, be more specific.
