Harmonics effects in generators

Harmonics effects in generators

Harmonics effects in generators

(OP)
A generator is to supply power for VFD drives. Is the effect of harmonics a concern on the generator tripping? Would the voltage variation due to vfd operation fool the generator to trip into operation?

Generator is stand-by to supply power upon normal power failure.

RE: Harmonics effects in generators

It could.. It could not..

It is very hard to predict as you are talking about maybe twenty variables that all interact. And then change with loading to interact yet differently in a dynamic manner.

Generally no you will be OK.

Often VFDs are used to get too-large for the generator motors to actually start.  This would be one demonstration of obtuse sizing.

Some marginally designed generator AVRs may have a fit others will be very robust.

If you can describe your generator model, and the approximate loading, and load mix, and VFD, we can probably give you a much better estimate of any concerns.

You can also design your system to allow input filters to the VFDs.  Don't install them but lay everything out to take the correct models, providing enough wire for the additions.  Then run the systems and see.  If you have issues just add the filtering.
