Compressing gas containing 20% O2

Compressing gas containing 20% O2

Compressing gas containing 20% O2

(OP)
Hi
it is my understanding that compressing gas with over 10% Oxygen is dangerous.
I have been asked to take a number of cylinders filled to 200 Bar of 20% Oxygen balance Helium, and compress them through to a pack containing 64 cylinders.  Can anyone confirm where i can find evidence to say compressing Oxygen at 20% is a big no no?
the make of the compressors are compair h series..

any help would be greately appreciated.
thanks

RE: Compressing gas containing 20% O2

This sounds rather like an air compressor in terms of hazard.

Certainly oxygen-enriched atmospheres (more oxygen than that in air) may need special precautions as things become rather more flammable.

RE: Compressing gas containing 20% O2

Compressing natural gas with 20% oxygen would be hazardous.  This would be true of other flammable gasses.

RE: Compressing gas containing 20% O2

The Upper Explosive Limit of  Natural Gas is 16% so even that would not be particullarly dangerous.  It sounds like you're compressing deep-diving tanks and that is done every day.  I would say the biggest hazard is the pressure.

you might consider using an oil-free compressor.
