Timing belt comparison

Timing belt comparison

Timing belt comparison

(OP)
Does anyone have a document or information which compares the benefits of the various toothed belt profiles? (eg HTD, AT, T, RPP, XL, L, H ...) ie. cost versus performance etc. I have access to the usual manufacturers design guides but they don't really give you comparisons they usually guide you towards their latest design.

RE: Timing belt comparison

No written documentation, but I think the theory is perhaps this:

If the mechanical strength theories & calculations hold true for elastomeric materials, the modern more "rounded" tooth designs would reduce stress concentrations at the tooth roots.  Therefore you get longer life before fatigue breakdown.

You should be asking your local power transmission distributor. They can take all the parameters of your drive design and enter it into a sowtware program that will give you suggestions based on service factors and cost. I know Dayco used to have these programs, which is now Carlisle . You should be able to download the software at their website http://www.cptbelts.com/

Robulus,

I looked into this quite a few years ago.  My impresson was that the metric HTD (?) series with the rounded teeth, were capable of higher speeds, and the English series belts were stiffer.

At some point, you have to believe the manufacturer's literature.  Analyze your requirements and do the calculations.

The rounded profiles also run quieter and give a smoother velocity profile by reducing the "Polygon effect" of small pulleys and so are less prone to belt resonance.

Ok thank you all for your help.

RE: Timing belt comparison

None of them run particularly quiet. They sing a note kind of like a siren at the frequency (Number of teeth) X (shaft rev/sec). If that is up in the 200-2000 Hz range there will be complaints aplenty.  Sealing them up to keep the noise in will create cooling problems .The enclosures will need to be quite stiff walled, so sheet metal enclosure may be noisy and still overheat the belts

Are you having trouble fitting in parts dimensioned to catalog selections?
