Space Frame

Space Frame

Space Frame

(OP)
I am currently trying to analyze a space frame from a Butler building constructed in the 1970's.  My issue is that i don't know what to assume for the yield strength of the steel.  If it is 30 ksi, it doesn't work, but if it is 50 ksi it does work.  I've tried calling Butler and the person i spoke with said he would send out some emails, but i haven't heard anything back (I just sent it) and don't want to wait to hear if they find out anything.

RE: Space Frame

Based on that time span, I would recommend you go out and take some coupon samples and send them to a lab for testing.

Anything Butler tells you now might not be all that accurate.  If the building was built in the 80's or 90's they might have specs, etc. but the 70's might be too long ago for them to have records...but I could be wrong.

RE: Space Frame

Call 'em back again...Tell him your client is thinking of adding on to the existing building, and you need the information to do a feasibility study.  Also tell him that the owner would like to stay with Butler for the expansion.

He will call...

RE: Space Frame

Pardon my ignorance but what is a butler building?

RE: Space Frame

Big US pre-engineered steel building company.  But I didn't know they did space frames.
