Free alternatives to Matlab

Free alternatives to Matlab

Free alternatives to Matlab

(OP)
I recently have been working on a Matlab project at work, but don't have Matlab on my home computer.

In the past I have used Scilab for this sort of thing, but it is equivalent to, rather than a clone of, Matlab.

In the past Octave has been recommended as an open source clone of Matlab. It has now reached release 3 and I am pleased to say that while it is not 100% compatible, you can at least develop a program on either platform, with reasonable success. The graphics have improved a lot.

I'd rather have Matlab, but I'd rather pay for Octave.

RE: Free alternatives to Matlab

I downloaded and installed a pre-built 3.0.1 for my (shame) Windoze home box today.  It crashed on startup.  I guess my PC or its OS is a bit too old.  I wonder what's being shipped with modern Linux distros?

Odd- I'm running it on XP on my 2 year old laptop, it is fine.

RE: Free alternatives to Matlab

SomptingGuy,

Fedora Core 6 does not have Octave.  Fedora deleted all sorts of apparently non-essential programs.  I am hoping these have been restored on the later versions.

I have installed version 3 from source.  I have installed earlier Windows versions in binary format.  The Free Software guys seem to understand that Windows normally does not include a C and a Fortran complier.

RE: Free alternatives to Matlab

I just installed 3.0.1 on my work Windoze machine and it seems to work just fine.  I may even try using it for real work for a while.

I can only find 2.x on our Linux machines at work.  We do have at least one machine with Red Hat AS5 on it I think, but can't remember which one though.
