Hollowcore Concrete Plank above Swimming Pool

Hollowcore Concrete Plank above Swimming Pool

Hollowcore Concrete Plank above Swimming Pool

(OP)
We have been asked by an Architect to use concrete plank above a swimming pool.  Has anyone used concrete plank for this type of application before?

I understand that the chlorides in the humidity caused by the pool water causes quite a bit of corrosion with steel.  If the strands in the plank rust out, then that will be a problem.

You should use concrete with low permeability and should not allow the concrete to crack by design.

I did one like that and also with wood Glu Lam's about 2 years ago, but it had special humidity controls with a special HVAC system for that issue. The top of the plank was also an elevated rear porch for a large house in NJ.

You can also look into using solid slabs instead of cored slabs.  These may be able to have more cover for reinforcing.  Some hollow core suppliers offer this option.

Plank is a pretty good option for this condition, assuming you have plank on the rest of the job.  Look at Fabcon's website.  Its basically the same as a bar joist - except you want to coordinate the depth a little closer.  You give them the load and criteria - they design it.  Look at diaphragm capacities topped and un-topped because the contractor will likely prefer untopped.

How about an epoxy or other paint that will reduce the permability??

A couple layers of vapor barrier paint on the underside of the planking?

Hollow core plank works in parking garages with deicing salt dripping on surface.  Chlorine in pool air is much less concentrated and should not be a negative with 5500 psi concrete.  A mid span beam will keep hollow core spans to reasonable length.

Also, with pre-cast concrete, the quality of the concrete should eb good amdmpermeability ought to be low.
I agree wth limiting crack width in design.
Recently I saw a double tee slab over a pool (health club) about 25 years old and no problems.
