tie rod for expansion joint

tie rod for expansion joint

(OP)
Hi,
till what amount of lateral movement I can use an axial expansion joint without tie rods? The bellows make also lateral +/- 15 mm.
Are the tie rods absolutely necessary?
Or can I operate the axial expansion joint with lateral movement, if the fixed points are stable enough to withstand the reaction force and spring rate of expansion joint?

Thanks,
Turnado

RE: tie rod for expansion joint

Tie rods will not help you with regard to lateral movment of an axial unit. If tie rods are fitted its axial capacity is zero, at least in terms of extension. Lateral movement of a single unit is limited by shear in the convolutions, and is usually a small value.

You need help from an expert / bellows supplier.
