adding a Part attribute

People ... I must be going nuts ... I cannot find how to add a part attribute name .... any ideas. no problems in the past with previous software revs.... I am hoping it is a switch somwhere that turns things on ...

RE: adding a Part attribute

Once created they can also be cut and paste to other files. You can follow the method John described above, and also you can do something similary using the ANT. Once you are in that dialog you will notice the familar Copy and Paste Icons. Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V can also work.

Good Luck

RE: adding a Part attribute

Hudson,

Be careful, if you select a part (i.e. component) from the Assembly Navigator and add an attribute there, these end up as Object Attributes assigned to the component, they are NOT Part Attributes assigned to the Part file.

Thanks guys for the information .... I am creating a part family and was using the part attribute as additional filtering criteria when inserting the part into an assembly ... hope this is good practice ...

RE: adding a Part attribute

John,

True enough I just think it is easier to do, but the danger that part attributes in the displayed part can be edited this way whereas any components will be assigned with object attributes rather than part attributes. On first explanation it is as hard to grasp as it is to explain. The functionality has its place but personally I would consider it an improvement if the dialog did allow you to edit the part attributes from the ANT if you have write access available to you..

Cheers

RE: adding a Part attribute

You don't understand, from the ASSEMBLY'S point of view the Part file is ONLY a Component, which exists only as an object INSIDE the Assembly, and BTW it would continue to exist in the Assembly (the Component) EVEN if you were to delete the actual Part File from the hard drive, and attributes assigned to that Component would also still exist, but only in the context of the Assembly.

If you want access to the PART attributes, make it the Work Part and even if the Assembly remains the Displayed Part, you can now go to File -> Properties... and edit the Part Attributes of the Part File.  Remember, the ANT only represents the Assembly and it's 'Components'.

No I think I do understand and I regret if I've opened a "Pandora's can of worms" that might confuse some readers with regard to the original post. What I observe is that based simply on how the dialogs present to the user the intent can be confusing, which is why I accept the validity of your original point and your latest response. My suggestion is that the users desire would be NOT to have to change displayed part in order to access the part attributes of components in an assembly. So should the opportunity ever present itself to allow for a change in the way the dialogs function so that either object or part attributes can be edited specifically and discretely from the ANT then many users might thank you for the enhancement.

Cheers

RE: adding a Part attribute

You still did not read what I posted.  You do NOT need to change the Displayed Part, only the Work Part (which BTW is a more efficient operation in NX 6, if you use the out-of-the-box defaults) and then File -> Properties... takes you to the Part Attributes.  Note that selecting anything and doing an MB3 -> Properties... will NEVER take you to Part Attributes.

On that note, let me say that we have a significant project in the works for NX 7 which will try to rationalize the differences between Part and Object Attributes and will make it easier to assign the desired attributes to the Objects/Parts that you wish.

RE: adding a Part attribute

I'm sorry, I misspoke.

If you use File -> Properties..., you are ALWAYS editing/adding PART attributes to the DISPLAYED Part, even if you're 'working in context', where the Work part is NOT the displayed part.  And from the ANT, if the Assembly is also the Work Part, than any use of MB3 -> Properties... you'll be editing/adding OBJECT Attributes of the Component objects inside the assembly.  However, if you're 'working in context', then doing an MB3 -> Properties... you'll have the option to either edit/add PART Attributes to the Part file or OBJECT Attributes to the Component (this is controlled by a option at the bottom of the Attribute dialog, which is only there when 'working in context').
