Differential gear noise in an Automobile

(OP)
We are now working on the preparation of Differential Noise in Automobile with Robustness Evaluation.
I wonder whether somebody know information appropriate design and manufacturing differential or vibration and noise on gear or Robustness evaluation.
I should be grateful for any information somebody can give me concerning your work in this field.

Yours sincerely,

RE: Differential gear noise in an Automobile

Congratulations. You have chosen a project of incredible complexity and difficulty. If you do this properly you will be able to write many papers.

1) You need a customer related measure of the noise. You might consider using an array of microphones, or possibly accelerometers on the casing of the diff. for obvious reaosns you need to demonstrate linakeg of this measurement back to the customer's perception of a noisy diff.

2) Diff noise varies considerably with mileage so you will need to establish some relatiosnhip between diff noise as built with that at the end of the warranty period. Good luck. On an automotive diff unit the whine tends to increase rapidly over the first 3000 km, then stays more or less constant until 30000 km, when it gets worse again.

3) Important parameters include the gear mesh error, and the accuracy of the housing. In my opinion you get little useful information from measuring GME on the gear sets, unless they are installed in the housing.

Cheers
