Structural/thermal analysis

Structural/thermal analysis

Structural/thermal analysis

(OP)
Hello, I need to study a frame multistories structure, wich is subject to force (constant during the time) and temperatures loads that could varying during the time. I need to study the behaviour of the structure, so the stress and the deformation due to the thermal dilatation.
So I should work with a non linear analysis. The problem is that it is the first time that I work with Ansys, because usually I use other softwares. Do you think that is possible to perform a study of that kind with Ansys?

I've seen that with a Beam24 element I can use Non-linear material, and I can assign different properties at different temperatures to the plastic material (my structure is in steel), so I guess that I can perform the study.

I can treat the temperature load as force load? Can I assign to the structure step-by-step and perform the analysis in that way?

Thank you, and sorry for my bad english.

RE: Structural/thermal analysis

You can perform the type of analysis you need with ANSYS. I would make sure you understand clearly what you are doing with the code before accepting the answers.

You can apply the temperature as a body load. Look at the bf command for more information. In workbench, for a static structural load you can simply insert a temperature condition. ANSYS is capable of multiple load steps.

Another question:

In my model I've different kind of sections and of material that I should assign to my frame (beam) elements. Is the command sequence LSEL and after LATT the only way to work? Because my structure consists in 70k elements, and I've 20 materials and around 4k sections. The problem is that I'm going to generate an input file with a code, but if I've a lot of sections can I select with LSEL one line by one, and after assign with LATT the characteristic that I need one by one? Or do you think that the code will became very slow? Usually other FE software works in a different way, with only a command to assign to the frame the sections and materials properties. Do you have any idea?

Do you know how can I plot the results? In the postprocessor I can see the nodal displacements, but when I want to see the stresses it is like that my structure does not have stresses...!

I guess that my problem is that stresses can be plotted only by element table, but how can I define an element table?

I've solved in half way. I've used the ETABLE command to create a table which contains the solutions. But now Ansys plot only the wireframe... I don't know how to plot the solution with the section of the beam displayed (I mean in the ESHAPE mode).
