Since in ASTM, grade A105 charpy test is not mandatory,but if I want to carry out the testing, at what temperature should I go? at -29C or at ambient temperature? From your experience is it necessary I do test at -29C because as we know A105 application is at ambient temperature and above. Anybody experience A105 failure at 0C below?

If the A 105 will be used at ambient temperature or above, I would not conduct CVN testing, it is really not necessary. IF there is a chance that the service temperature can reach -29 deg C and depending on the application, I would conduct CVN tests if the forging was supplied in an annealed condition. For N&T or Q&T I would have no problem down to -29 deg C.

Why? Because this material by specification is suited for moderate to elevated temperature service. It is not produced to a fine grain practice and with the wide range of heat treatments by specification, one can get CVN values all over the map (this is based on first hand expierence with decent values and marginal values at -29 deg C).

There was a technical paper I came across with the subject of brittle fracture in A105 flanges. I have a copy of the paper in my files;

"Susceptibility to Brittle Fracture of Flanges in ASTM A105"by A. Dhooge and E. Deleu from the Belgium Welding Institute (BWI). This is a decent paper on the problems with A105 and not having a N or Q&T hea treatment to improve notch toughness. This is a very good paper to review if you would like more background information.
