I was involved into insulation design and process unit thermal calculation.It is to my knowlege that no clear defined ambient heat transfer coefficent(convective and radiative combined). Several design spec defined equations but their results varied in 10 times. I am wanting to know if there is published code or practice in how to evaluate this value.

I am asking specificlly heat transfer coefficient for ambient exposed insulated tank , vessel and cold box.

Try ASTM-C680 or BS EN ISO 12241

There was a good article in the Petroleum Refiner issue of May 1959 (!) Vol. 38 No. 5 titled Find Heat Losses Graphically by Charle R. Kise. You may find it in a technical library.

What do you mean be "clearly defined?"  Heat transfer coefficient is a well defined concept and covered by most heat transfer texts.  Since it's a function of wind, temperature, and other environmental conditions, only YOU can define the correct values for your installation.

Thank you all for your input.

ASTM-C680 has a good coverage of all my questions. Especially it refers back to Frank Incropera 's heat transfer book which I happened to own and which was one of my favorite book. Following this, I may be able to develop a standard MathCAD "black box" for future inputs plugged in.

I tried my techstreet subscription and university library but had no luck either on BS EN ISO 12241 or Petroleum Refiner journal paper.
