Old I-Beam Properties

Old I-Beam Properties

Old I-Beam Properties

(OP)
I have a bridge that I'm analyzing for a heavy load.  The bridge was designed back in 1926!  Two different I-beams are called out.  They are a 10I22.4# and a 15I42.9#.  Does anyone know where I can find the dimensions and properties of these sections?

RE: Old I-Beam Properties

There's an S15x42.9 in the 9th AISC.

RE: Old I-Beam Properties

Have you tried the AISC database for historic shapes?
You can download it from the web page.

RE: Old I-Beam Properties

My 1923 Carnegie manual has some "B" beams listed that might be close.

B67 - 10" deep - 22.4 #/ft
Flange width 5.5000"
Web thickness 0.252"

B7 - 15" deep - 42.9 #/ft
Flange width 5.500"
Web thickness 0.410"

My 1934 Bethlehem Steel manual has a I15 x 42.9 lbs with the same dimensions listed above.  It also has the following properties:
Ix=441.8 in4
Sx=58.9 in3
rx=5.95 in
mean flange thickness 5/8"

My Bethlehem manual doesn't have a 22.9 # 10" I shape.

Are you able to measure the actual beam to verify its dimensions?

Thanks alot nutte!  It looks like the "B" beams are the correct ones.  Does it also give the Ix or Sx values for the B67?  And is there allowable stresses given; flexural, shear, bearing, etc?

RE: Old I-Beam Properties

No Sx or Ix for the B67.  I'm sure allowable stresses are in there, but they would take time to dig out.

SlideRuleEra's website has the 1923 Carnegie pocket companion scanned in.  I bet it has what you're looking for.
