Reorient part axes

Reorient part axes

(OP)
Hey there.  First time Eng-Tips poster, long time reader.

I have an IGES part (A) that I'd like to join to an existing Inventor IPT part (B).

It seems like the easiest way to do this is to use the "Import" command in Inventor.  This brings the IGES data in as a set of surfaces, which I then can fill via the "Sculpt" command.  That's all fine and dandy, but...

My IGES part is not oriented in the correct fashion, i.e. what is the Y-axis in (A) is the Z-axis in (B).  Therefore, when I import, the surfaces are not in the correct orientation (luckily the origin is in the right palce in space).

Two routes exist to solve this problem:

1) Reorient the IGES axes such that when it imports, the parts line up properly.

2) Join the parts in some other fashion where I have more control on individual component orientation (using an assembly?)

Any thoughts on the topic are appreciated.  Thanks!

RE: Reorient part axes

Derive Component from iam.
