DIY expanded shale

DIY expanded shale

(OP)
I have a great deal of shale ...  Has anyone ever heard of onsite processing of expanded shale?  It might be useful in improving the very heavy silty clay loam elsewhere on the property.

RE: DIY expanded shale

What are the properties of the expanded shale.

Manufactured expanded shale is very valuable as a lightweight aggregate in concrete. If is a very energy intensive process that can only be done in a dedicated plant.

If you are describing naural shale particles that are very absorptive and unsuitable for most purposes? They are easy to detect by touching them to your tongue. Beded shale is a diferent item since it is a metamorphic rock that has not been sujected to weathering.

You might be aware of specific uses or some clue about the natural properties.

I have natural shale, most of it underground but near the surface.  Some weathered and on the surface.  That's very common, of course.  But it's also in a location where a small kiln and truck access could be made pretty easily, so I was wondering if it is feasible to think of making my own "manufactured expanded shale" as you describe.

Before beginning construction of anything I'd test the existing shale, but I haven't done that yet.
