could anybody suggest to get some information on the design of helical type stair (supports at top and bottom only)? what's the concept, theory involved in designing such stair?

You will find an excellent article on helical stairs in Beton Kalender 1954 Part 2, page 185, if you can read German. Later reprints may be available. Suggest you contact the publisher on

You can refer to "Reinforced concrete designer's hand book" by Chrles E Reynolds(Table 176, p-448, ix edition, Cement and concrete association, Wexham Springs, Slough)

Sorry, I have no idea about any web sites. The book I referd to is a quite old one. But I happen to come accross the site http:\\www.inducta.com.au\ where they talk about a software for the design of helical staircase in addition to other tools.

Look for Design Charts for helical stairs with fixed supports by A.R. Cusens & S. Santathadaporn.
