Hot Dip Galv versus Cold Rolled Steel

Hot Dip Galv versus Cold Rolled Steel

Hot Dip Galv versus Cold Rolled Steel

Hello,

in order to choose between HDG and CRS for our application I would like to know what a realistic long term -average- price difference would be between the two. Obviously I have checked historic prices at CRU monitor etc, but it's hard to average those and then make a good decision.

Can anybody tell me what the average cost price difference is between CRS and HDG, which I hope will be a better determining figure for the time-averaged pricing difference ?
(as it will be the level above which new HDG capacity will be installed, and below which CRS capacity will be built)

thanks

RE: Hot Dip Galv versus Cold Rolled Steel

What is your application?  How long to you need the component to last?  If you need the galvanizing for corrosion protection, then you have to figure in the cost of replacement of the cold rolled (non-galvanized) steel when it corrodes faster than the galvanized steel.  For example, if the CRS is half the price of HDG, but lasts a quarter of the life, you're not saving money by using cold rolled steel in the long run.

as far as application goes: it's supposed to last for 10 years after having been painted. some parts are interior and would not necessarily need zinc, some are exterior. Basically we think we could save money using HDG as it will relax our demands on our paintshop.

Check with several steel distributors. Prices can change weekly.

There is generally a 10 cents (before any surcharges) per pound difference between Cold Rolled and Galvanized. Depending on your gauge you will see the pricing differ even more.  Under .033 I believe is where the pricing gets further apart.  If you are still in the planning stages, have you considered  galvannealed for your product? Better paintablity than galvanized.  Also, you might be able to get some stock for a good price with the automotive slowdown.
