As for a heat exchanger, is space between the floating head cover and the shell head besides it filled with medium same to the shellside? Thanks a lot.

RE: Space between floating head and the head besides it

Yes etsen, the space between the shell cover and the floating head is the shell side and accordingly the shellside fluid.

But I think the fluid can't flow in the space which could be dead one. And the dead space may increase the corrosion rate in the space?

RE: Space between floating head and the head besides it

It isn't dead space, the shell side fluid (ie. the fluid that circulates on the outside of the tubes) fills this space.

RE: Space between floating head and the head besides it

I think etsen's concern is that this area is stagnant. That concern is valid, since the space between the floating and fixed heads is not in any flow path. This could result in higher (or lower) corrosion in that area. All this should be considered in the design of the exchanger. FYI, I have not seen many instances where people are concerned by this.
