Shell element meshing

Shell element meshing

Shell element meshing

(OP)
Greetings,
Does anyone have a good reference that indicates the variation of flexural stiffness of a shell element with the amount of meshing?

Meaning if I have a 30' x 30' bay and lateral load transfer is from floor elements to a wall element, then how much effect does the degree of meshing have on the lateral stiffness (flexural stiffness) of the shell element?

I am trying to see how much accuracy in lateral stiffness maybe lost when I choose a coarse mesh over a finer mesh.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Here's an idea:

Try it and see what happens.  A good analyst will run case studies to see how model changes effect results.

yeah, suck it and see for yourself !

Slickdeals,

Do a convergence study. Cheers!

RE: Shell element meshing

In general, a coarser mesh is stiffer than a finer mesh. In either case, coarse or fine mesh, you must show your results are independent of the mesh; this requires an excellent error estimation procedure--the usual technique is to keep cramming in elements until the results don't change. What do the error estimators in  your FEA say? Might be a good time to find out!
