Drive a brushless dc motor

Drive a brushless dc motor

(OP)
Hi, everyone,

If a brushless dc generator is rated at 10kw at 2000RPM, is it safe to drive it as a motor to obtain 5kw at 500RPM for a short period of time? My concern is that generator is only capable of generating 2.5kw at 500RPM (roughly 10/2000*500). To drive it at 5kw doubles the rated current. It may demagnetized the magnets. Can anyone comment on this issue.

Thank you so much.

RE: Drive a brushless dc motor

Hi, as long as you stay within the rated current you will be ok. Overcurrent will degrade the magnets as well as causing overheating.

Suggestion: It may be a good idea to contact the generator manufacturer about it since 5kW motor at 500RPM will need the higher current than the 2.5kW generator output current at 500RPM.
