I am in the process of upgrading a home built electric bike.

2 Part Question:
A.)
The current motor is 24V - and it is slightly underpowered.
I have another motor that is stamped 90vdc, can I run this type of a motor at 24V?

I know that you can run 12V / and 24V @ 48V - for double power, I am assuming that I can run a 90vdc at less with less HP?

B.) Assuming the answer to question A is 'NO' - is there any method of stepping up the batteries to run the 90vdc motor - or is this motor useless for this application.

A DC motor's speed is proportional to its armature voltage if the excitation is at nominal voltage - or if it is a permanent magnet motor.

So, if the motor is the permanent magnet type, you will get 24/90 or around one quarter of rated speed at full load. The torque available should be same as with full voltage.

This question should actually not be put here. We try to keep discussions in a rather wide, but still professional, area. And rebuilding a private bike is *somewhat* outside that area. So, be prepared to see this thread red flagged and removed by the site administrator.

You mention using 2X or 4X voltage to increase power. Expect to lose power in the same ratio when dropping from 90 V rated to 12 V applied.
Why not reconnect or change the battery to 24 volts on the existing motor?
