Cost effective engraving

Cost effective engraving

I'm looking for the most cost effective manner to engrave hardened 416 stainless 0.010" deep for two numbers ranging from 0.030" tall by 0.006" deep to 0.100" tall by 0.020" deep. Two numbers are at two precise locations engraved on a flat object. Same thing every time. Seven different set-ups(sizes) overall. Looking to plug and go whenever necessary. Fixturing I can envision. Looking for specific suggestions on the best equipment. Thanks.

RE: Cost effective engraving

Do you want engraving or marking ?  What are your production requirements?  What quality of mark do you require?  Answering all of these questions will help define your necessary process.

Some processes that come to mind:
Laser Marking / Laser Engraving
Pin Marking
Stamping

The numbers show in a molded part so they have to look as good as the rest of the machine engraved information. Everything else is pre-cut. The numbers may or may not be needed. Trying to keep inventory down.

Do you have a time requirement (like parts per minute)?  If not, you might look into carbon electrode EDM.

Stamping is the easiest way, but you'd have to do it before hardening.  Etching is also an option, but you probably wouldn't get the .006" depth.

I would encourage you to look at this very cool engraving device. You can use it on a CNC machine and with it being "spring loaded" tool breakage is minimal....Great product!
