Another one of the pioneers.

He helped me with my dissertation a little bit, which is how I knew him.  Nice guy, and a major contributor to the field.

RE: Passing of Dr. Jorj Osterberg

I'll second DRG's assessment of Dr. Osterberg.  I met him twice - once in Vancouver and then at the San Francisco ISSMFE convention.  A big loss to our profession.

RE: Passing of Dr. Jorj Osterberg

A firm I was with hired him for two difficult jobs as advisory.  In each instance we got very good practical advice.

I once recall being at a Geotech Conference at North Western Univ., maybe 1970 and I happened to be in chow line behind him when he was discussing his ancestry with Mr. Hugh Golder.  Being that I am 100% also Swede extraction it intrigued me to hear his discussion of the Swedes way back about 1,000 AD pillaging Europe.  That prompted me to check out my ancestry and sure enuff they (the Swedes) even took slave prisoners and sold them.  The money was used to build some of the biggest Churches in Sweden.

I also recall he drove a Saab.
