Need help identifying a drafting symbol

Need help identifying a drafting symbol

(OP)
I have a symbol on a mechanical drawing that I can't identify.  It is a circle with a slash through it. What does it represent? The drawing is dealing with measurements in mm for length/width etc.

RE: Need help identifying a drafting symbol

Does "Diameter" make sense?  Can you post an image?

Ø = diameter

RE: Need help identifying a drafting symbol

Not to be confused with Greek letter Phi by our more scientifically minded friends.

"The diameter symbol in engineering, ⌀, is often incorrectly referred to as "phi". This symbol is used to indicate the diameter of a circular section, for example ⌀14 means the diameter of the circle is 14 units."  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phi_%28letter%29

RE: Need help identifying a drafting symbol

Great monkeydog, although it would appear to be an extract for the 1982 version or earlier, not that it makes a diff for the dia sympbol.

RE: Need help identifying a drafting symbol

Kenat,
Not great enough for the coveted star?

RE: Need help identifying a drafting symbol

If you have to ask, the answer is "no".

RE: Need help identifying a drafting symbol

Sympathy star for monkeydog.

RE: Need help identifying a drafting symbol

(OP)
Thanks for giving the correct answer.  It was diameter (Nordic).

RE: Need help identifying a drafting symbol

I'm not proud.
I'm and engineer.

RE: Need help identifying a drafting symbol

Nope, and none of that sympathy star nonsense from me.winky smile

Mad deserves a star first if we're just giving them away  as he got the correct answer straight off, so here goes.

RE: Need help identifying a drafting symbol

Too bad the time stamp doesn't display seconds, that could have been interesting to see how lagged TheTicks connection is.

Thanks for the Star.

RE: Need help identifying a drafting symbol

Now that we've destroyed the purpose of stars on eng-tips, one for Tick since he actually inserted the proper symbol and made his statement definitively before monkeydog

RE: Need help identifying a drafting symbol

Yea, Yea Tick did give the right answer, but he gave no backup documentation.

Sympathy star, random star, stolen star, make no difference to me, when I collect enough, I am trading them in for one of those foo-foo coffee's at Buckies.

RE: Need help identifying a drafting symbol

You can trade your stars for coffee! Sweet!

RE: Need help identifying a drafting symbol

<alt>0216 to get "Ø" (must use number pad)

RE: Need help identifying a drafting symbol

Wow I had always wondered why I couldn't get those 4 digit characters to work on my pc, I didn't know you needed to use the number pad ☻ ☺ ☻ ☺ ☻ ☺

RE: Need help identifying a drafting symbol

Tick -

Do you have a listing of other symbols accessed by the same methodolgy?

° = <alt> 0176
± = <alt> 0177

square and cube are out there, but I never used them and forgot

RE: Need help identifying a drafting symbol

TheTick,

Thanks for Ø and ±.  I always wanted to know how to do those.

Please note everyone, that on the TGML preview page, there is a "Click here" that shows you all sorts of TGML codes, not including the ones above.  TheTicks values work nicely.  Also, you can go to http://www.w3c.org, and read through the HTML standards to find more character codes.

RE: Need help identifying a drafting symbol

Alt codes are also quite easy to get from Character Map.  Start->Run and enter "charmap"

-handleman, CSWP (The new, easy test)

RE: Need help identifying a drafting symbol

I found mine just by rooting around in the Character Map.  Also found in Windoze under "... --> Accessories --> System Tools"

JMarv,

TGML codes are based on HTML.  A lot of stuff works.

RE: Need help identifying a drafting symbol

If you click on the 'Process TGML' link when making a post, then click on the 'TGML Character Entity Reference' link in the window which opens up, the available special characters are shown. You can insert them in the way you would insert a smiley.

Can I have a star? tongue

RE: Need help identifying a drafting symbol

You must be REALLY bored today, Tick.  You did it in less than 17 minutes which is quite impressive...
