SW 2008 Square to Round?

SW 2008 Square to Round?

SW 2008 Square to Round?

(OP)
I'm an Inventor user and would like to know if SW 2008 can create square to round transitions in sheetmetal, and can they be unfolded? We are thinking of adding a seat for one of our larger customers that require this functionality. Inventor can do this with an add on package from SPI, but its very expensive....
Any advice would be great!
Thanks

RE: SW 2008 Square to Round?

SW can create a "lofted bend" sheetmetal feature that can be flattened.  The flat pattern will be wrong.

Unfolding non-Gaussian forms takes more than the simple sheet metal unfolding algorithms that reside in CAD programs like SW or inventor or even UG and Pro/E.  To do it accurately, you need an addin like BlankWorks (or Inventor's SPI addon).

Yes, this is what I thought. We (Inventor) can create a square to round, but the sketch for the round is actually just a series of short straight lines, which then can be unfolded...thanks for the help.

Has anyone checked how wrong is the flat pattern? Is it smaller or bigger? The error is 1% or 10%?

RE: SW 2008 Square to Round?

we use the lofted bend for our square to round transitions, and they come out correctly.  The only time we have encountered wrong flat patterns with the lofted bend command it when we tried to make a cone.

In SWx it is kind of similar.  Each sketch has to have the same number of sketch segments (3 straight lines, 2 radii).  We create our transitions in two halves, and they are working very well.
