SW 2008 sp2.1 dumps toolbars

SW 2008 sp2.1 dumps toolbars

SW 2008 sp2.1 dumps toolbars

(OP)
Does anyone else have the SW package routinely dump the toolbars and reset to defaults (or have found a fix for it?)  Every couple of weeks it wipes out any customization and returns them to pseudo defaults (randomly dispersed around the screen) after giving an "inconsistent toolbar" error message.

RE: SW 2008 sp2.1 dumps toolbars

No, I have not experienced that in SW2008.  I would update to SW4.0 if you can, there are some fixes for other issues that SP4 takes care of and may fix your issue.

Do you know about the Copy Settings Wizard? Start > Programs > SolidWorks > SolidWorks Tools.  Run the tool and save out your SW settings.  Then you can run the tool again to reset you SW settings when they get messed up.

Never happen to me, never heard of anyone. SP4.0 is out. Upgrade and see if you still have the problem. Make sure your graphic card is certified by SW and with the latest certified driver.

RE: SW 2008 sp2.1 dumps toolbars

Sounds like a registry issue to me. Does your IT department regularly run some sort of a registry cleaner?
Also, what version of SolidWorks are you using? If you're on '07 or '08, the command manager is a better option than having a bunch of toolbars taking up graphics area.

RE: SW 2008 sp2.1 dumps toolbars

SW knowledge base lists this error from SW07. It still happens in 08. Happened to me not more than 3 weeks ago.

You have ot go to your Registry HKCU\Software\Solidworks\Solidworks 2008\User Interface\ API Toolbars - remove or rename API Toolbars and your toolbars will return like they were.

I've got a "custom API toolbars" under the specified registry key with a number of sub keys, is this what you were referencing?

BTW - I do backup the toolbars but have gotten intermittent errors when trying to restore them so that doesn't always work (seems to be about 50% of the time).  Had the same issues with 2007 where it wouldn't allow a full restore and sometimes would fail at the toolbars.  Not all machines here have the issue - it seems to be more prevalent on the laptops and we've learned to work around it.

IT does not have a scheduled service to clean the registry - we run diagnostic and antivirus that checks for major errors and hacks but thats about it.

RE: SW 2008 sp2.1 dumps toolbars

I know I'm preaching the same sermon again, but why not just ditch your toolbars altogether?  The UI of '08 with the pop-up menus, "s" key customization and keyboard shortcuts will all increase your speed and efficiency.  I know it's a little daunting at first, but I'd never go back.  Especially since the toobars aren't that stable.  If you talk to some of the folks at SW, they claim that there is no problem since it is not reproducible even though a quick search on any of the fora will show a pattern of toolbar crappiness.  So, I'd recommend you get to know the new UI better.

I tried the new setup and simply don't like the way it functions.  Our department indivudually messed with it for a couple of months and to a head went back to the old toolbars (so at least I'm not alone in my impression of the new system).  I know at some time I'll be forced into it when they disable the old toolbars but I'm not willing to hand over the keys just yet.

I guess I'm still under the naive impression that someday SW may look into making the software more stable so that it actually functions as intended rather than adding more graphics and flash.  Having fancy bodywork and a leather interior sells more product than developing a reliable engine though so I don't expect much to change - it worked for microsoft ;)
