im not trying to unfold the view though.  im trying to crop, why would it tell me anything about unfolding?

learning more cryptic SW warning messages, cool.

Right click view and select "Properties"
Disable "Show in exploded state"
Crop the view
Enable "Show in exploded state"

Are you trying to crop a detail view?  If so, just make your detail circle (or sketch) smaller.  That way you don't need the crop.
