Struggling with "simple" 2D Abaqus model with 2 components interacting

Struggling with "simple" 2D Abaqus model with 2 components interacting

(OP)
Hello everyone, I hope that there is someone that might be able to guide me in the right direction with a problem that I've been struggling with for the past few weeks.

I am trying to model the interaction between a thigh bone (modelled as a cylinder) and a fracture fixation plate which is attached to the bone using a number of screws. The screws are locked in the plate and can be assumed to be pins extruded from the plate, therefore the system can be thought of as being 2 seperate components.

I have attached a screenshot of the model..there is a fracture gap in the bone and the force is applied in the region shown..the force is increasing steadily over time.

The plate/screw system is made of titanium with a Y's Modulus of 130E9 and Poissons ratio of 0.3. The bone has a ratio of 0.28 and a Modulus of 12E9.

When I run the model, I always receive an error stating that too many attempts of a step iteration were made..I think there may be a problem with my contact surfaces between the pins and bone. I have default normal interaction and a frictionless tangental interaction.

In short, Abaqus (and FEA in general) is completely new to me so I would sincerly appreciate it if anyone could look at this system and give me some advice about how to model it.

Kind regards,

Harry
