I have never designed a timber pile...but find the need to do it now. I have done enough timber design to get the concepts, but am stumped about the round member...

How do you determine the shear capacity of a round member? Can you use the typical 85 psi allowable shear stress of a timber member and and use the 4/3*R/A equation?

Per the NDS 2001, the fact that the timber pile is round is not a factor when computing shear capacity. Just multiply the allowable shear stress x crossectional area. Since a timber pile is naturally tapered, carefully choose the crossectional area.
