if i have an assembly where movement of a component is desirable (purposely one unconstrained DOF), each movement results in the system wanting to regenerate.  Is this how it is? or does a parts have to be marked as movable?

RE: moveable components...

If you're talking about the assembly having to be rebuilt then, yes.  The assembly must be rebuilt after parts move.

Thanks for the reply...

If i have a movable sub assembly, how does one keep it movable in a parent assembly?

RE: moveable components...

Look up "flexible subassembly" in help.  Flexible is the key SolidWorks terminology for what you desire.
