Renaming a batch of files

Renaming a batch of files

Renaming a batch of files

(OP)
I've got a load of old files that need renaming to fit in with our current system.  Is there a clever way of batch processing this.

I've done a few by hand in SW explorer using; open file, find where used, rename. Its pretty tedious as it takes ages to find where used.

RE: Renaming a batch of files

A few years ago, we too were going through this tedium.  The best method we found was to list all of the files in a spreadsheet (just so we wouldn't lose track of where we left off) and do the SW Explorer process as you described.  It truly is a tedious process and if you are not systematic, errors will occur.  Good luck.

Use "Pack and Go". You can change the file names before you save everything. It updates the references. You still have to do them one at a time but all the files are listed in the dialog box.

RE: Renaming a batch of files

i have a related question - how do you "find where used"?

RE: Renaming a batch of files

I solidworks explorer (at least 2006 and earlier)... Open the file, in the toolbar on the left, there is a button for "where used".

There is no tool inside SolidWorks (unless something was added in '07) to find where a part is used.

MadMango's statement will list all of the files used in or referenced by the current part of assembly.
