Can Anyone Recommend a Book to Introduce Me To Processes & Plastics

Can Anyone Recommend a Book to Introduce Me To Processes & Plastics

Can Anyone Recommend a Book to Introduce Me To Processes & Plastics

(OP)
Hi,
You guys have helped me tremendously in the past, as I am a complete layman with regards to plastics and the processes used to mould them.
I would now like to try and learn a little for myself, and am hoping you guys will once again be able to help me, by recommending any books you know of that explain the different methods for processing plastics, like injection moulding, etc. And the advantages and disadvantages of each. Also I would like to learn a little about the properties of the differing types of plastic.
Hopefully I will then be able to educate myself a little and not have to pester you guys so much.
Thanks,
Nick.

RE: Can Anyone Recommend a Book to Introduce Me To Processes & Plastics

You could look for:

Plastics Engineering Handbook of the Society of the Plastics Industry.  This book has a lot of useful, although pretty general (which may be a great starting point for you) information.  I found a used copy on Amazon a while back, and if I recall correctly an Amazon search will turn up a lot of other good references.

In days of yore, I collected printed design manuals for the various available resins, which were supplied gratis by the resin manufacturers.   Some were better than others, of course, but the price was right.

I'm betting you can get CDs now.

RE: Can Anyone Recommend a Book to Introduce Me To Processes & Plastics

Mike I have such a collection I obtained through the 60s 70s & 80s. They are irreplaceable.

The reasons I have been given by the 35 year Golden Stallions with the MBAs who got control of marketing at the time was, "to much information only confuses them and scares them off" them being prospective customers and designers.

A significant number of "them" still call on me for advice and also vigorously guard the books I supplied them over the years.

The Golden Stallions are probably working for Microsoft now.

Bottom line, the old raw material suppliers books are best but are mostly out of print by any media.

One good entry level book is
"Know Yoyr Plastics"  ISBN 0 646 06867 9
Available from http://www.pacia.org.au

It is fairly brief and simple on each subject but is very broad and covers every topic except design and more recent alloys. It is at basic level. It is somewhat out of date

I would guess the cost is something like $40.00. As I was a little involved in the first revision, and have presented their lecture series at times, I never actually needed to buy one.
