Magnesium - standard profiles?

Magnesium - standard profiles?

Magnesium - standard profiles?

(OP)
As a designer I am often asked to conceptualize items, depending on the product and method of manufacture I consider what material is available. For steel and Aluminum I use the typical "books" from suppliers (realizing that all sizes listed are not always whats available). I am presently looking at a vib fixture that typically has been made out of magnesium in the past. This time it begs to be made as a weldment. I want to take into consideration "std" plate, tube, bar sizes.
Can someone point me to a 'stock' list or a supplier that may be helpful

Thank you..

RE: Magnesium - standard profiles?

The magnesium market is not large enough to have truly standard products available.  The last decade has shifted the industry fundamentally to ingot production only in China, the UK and Israel, with automotive die castings produced in Asia, Europe and North America.  Wrought products are produced by Magnesium Elektron in North America and Europe, Timminco extrudes in North America, and Israel and China produce some wrought products.

You can try distributors.  Mark Metals is one:

RE: Magnesium - standard profiles?

There are few sources for material properties of magnesium. The most robust would be the MMPDS published by Battelle, but here are few alloys listed. The next most reliable source will be the Metals Handbook published by ASM, most mechanical properties are accurate and reliable. Lastly, the material producers may provide information, try IMA (international magnesium association).
