welding procedure qualification

(OP)
Guys, I need your help.

I am reviewing welding procedures for a 304L Stainless Steel vessel. The design temperature of the vessel is -127C (-197F). According to ASME VIII, impact test is exempted for the base metal (UHA-51d). However, impact test for welding procedure qualification can not be exempted (UHA-51e). am I right?

If impact test is required for the welds, then the vendor shall provide the impact test value in the PQR. In this case, the supplementary essential variables are considered as Essential variable. Right? Please advice, thanks.

After reading through the entire Section of UHA-51, UHA-51 (d) would exempt you from impact testing base metal/HAZ because your MDMT is warmer than -327 deg F. UHA-51 (e)2 would NOT exempt you from impact testing of weld metal because your MDMT is colder than -155 deg F.

Impact testing values are required for weld metal used in the weld procedure that is qualified for vessel fabrication.

metengr,

thanks for your advice.

So, in my case, if I do welding procedure qualification (ASME IX), the supplementary essential variables are considered as Essential variable. Right?

RE: welding procedure qualification

Yes.
